Google tends to feature a few different of its trademark doodles on its homepage every week, but every now and then, the company goes all out and does interactive doodles. This week, the honor to be featured in one of these goes to Les Paul, the legendary musician and inventor Les Paul who passed away in 2009. The Les Paul doodle is an interactive guitar that – if you look closely – somewhat resembles the Google logo. What makes today’s doodle special is that it’s not just interactive but that you can also record your own songs with it.

Once you press the record button, you can strum the guitar as you like and then share your creation with your friends. It’s actually quite hard to come up with a decent melody, but I wouldn’t be surprised if we saw some interesting compositions over the next 24 hours that the doodle is scheduled to stay up on the Google homepage.

For the technically inclined, it’s worth noting that the doodle was made with, as Google describes it, “a combination of JavaScript, HTML5 Canvas (used in modern browsers to draw the guitar strings), CSS, Flash (for sound) and tools like the Google Font API, goo.gl and App Engine.”
